Over the Air HDTV

Are you familiar with the term over the air HDTV? Over the air HDTV is basically one way of sending out network and channel broadcasts for TV. Before the advent of HDTV or even cable and satellite, TV channels were picked up by TV antennas called rabbit ears. If you are familiar with the term, you will remember the days when 2 antennas in a small box were stuck up over your TV that were adjustable for the channel reception.

Today we have over the air broadcasts as well as cable, satellite, disks and computers. When you receive an over the air transmission today it could be in either regular or standard definition (SDTV) or in high definition (HDTV). High definition is a way of digitally transmitting with a higher resolution than regular transmitting like SDTV. The picture you view, if received using over the air HDTV, broadcasting will be a spectacular one.

To be able to view over the air HDTV broadcasts you will have to have a tuner, specifically an ATSC HDTV tuner. You can get the tuner one of two ways. First, you can buy a HDTV which will have the tuner included. This way you have everything supplied in the TV. The second way is to buy an HD ready TV. This means that your TV is ready to be set up for HDTV. The way to do this is to buy a HDTV tuner and connect to the HD ready TV.

Either way, you decide to go you will need an antenna to get the over the air HDTV. The antenna will come in either UHF or UHF/VHF, and the choice is yours as to which one you use. The antenna can also be either an indoor or an outdoor antenna. This choice is usually dictated by the amount of space you have available. You would need to check online as to what antenna you would need to use.

There are pros and cons to everything. Here are a couple of pros and cons for the over the air broadcast in HDTV. The pros are that you will get exceptional quality picture. There is no cost for HDTV, like there is for your cable or satellite. The cons are that it will require an antenna to get the reception. The reception is limited in areas. There are not as many channels as satellite or cable TV.
